As a small business owner, you have a lot on your plate and social media is a time-consuming part and can be overwhelming. Where should you even start? In this blog post, you will learn which steps to take when handling your social media.
Have a strategy
The most important part is to have a strategy in place. You want to know who your target audience is, on which platforms they hang out and set yourself some measurable goals with your social media.
If you have no idea how to create a social media strategy, you can get my guide by clicking here. This is template I use to create the strategy for all my clients.
After working with many businesses over the past few years I noticed a few mistake that almost every business at least once did. Read my blog about the three most common mistakes business are making with their social media and avoid them. Click here to read the blog.
Have an action plan
After you decided on your goals and found out which platforms you should use (read also my guide here), then you create your monthly plan. It is important to have a plan at the beginning of each month otherwise it can easily happen that you not only forget to post but post content that is not relevant to your target audience or is not a part of your strategy.
I created a FREE monthly planner for you to download click here
With this planner, you also get a checklist with daily and weekly activities for each platform. Stick to those tasks and don’t let yourself get distracted by Facebook groups, Instagram pictures etc.
Use a system
Once you have your plan, try to make your life as easy as possible and automate the things you can. Plan your pins, your tweets, your Facebook and Instagram posts ahead and you will have the headspace to focus on your business, knowing that your social media is taken care of.
If you don’t know what tools to use, you find a selection of my favorite planning tools in this blog post. Click here to read.
Listen and be social
After your planned your content, your work is NOT finished. You have to check on a daily basis (get my checklist here, so you don’t forget) what your fans and followers are saying. Did they leave a comment? Talk about you on Twitter or simply just ask you a question on Facebook? Make sure you answer all your questions and reply to all comments, even if your followers didn’t ask a question. This step is important to build a relationship with your fans and create trust.
But what should I post?
If you have no idea what to post I love this website for Inspiration. Simply enter a topic and it will give you the most shared articles on this topic. If you just google a topic you can never be sure whether a topic is interesting for your community. However, if you look through articles that already got shared a lot, you have an idea on what topics might be interesting.
I also created content ideas for Facebook and Twiter.
