Instagram Stories are a great way to connect with your audience and show behind the scenes and day to day aspects of your business and life – yet most many businesses seem to think that this feature is only for bloggers or influencers and therefor don’t use Instagram stories for business reasons.
“ I don’t know how to use stories or I don’t know what to put on my Instagram stories” are the two main sentences I hear from my clients.
In this blog post, you will learn how you can use stories for your business.
Why Instagram stories for business?
The main reason why you want to use Instagram stories for your business is that it allows you to show more of your business/brand. You can be more visible and in my opinion, it is way easier and faster to create a story. You don’t have to think about what caption to write or if the colors are aligned with your feed.
Another great reason why you should use stories is that you can use the highlight feature. Your most important message or product can be on your story highlight – more about that later.
The main reason why I suggest using stories is because it gives your brand a face. People learn more about your brand, see how you create things and who you are. This will turn followers into true fans and you can connect with them by asking questions and start a real conversation.
What to post on Instagram stories
Behind the scenes
No matter what business you are in you can always film behind the scenes stories.
Here are some ideas:
Show your office, film your office pets if you have any, create boomerangs with your morning coffee mug, ask what your followers prefer coffee or tea, if you create a product film the process, if you got products delivered, film the unpacking, if you work from home show your home office, talk to the camera and say what you just worked on, don’t be afraid to also show what went wrong on your business (false delivery etc.)
Fun facts about you, about your staff, about your office etc. How about a fun fact Friday as a regular thing on your story?
Products in use
Show the product in use, or ask clients to send their product in use (make it exciting, so that they want to be featured in your story)
Teach something online
Depending on your business, choose one topic and teach it online. How to…
This works great for coaches because it shows people for free how your coaching style is, your personality, your voice etc.
This is perfect for a launch: either for a product or a course. People can ask any questions they might have and if you answer them in detail and live it might convince them to buy.
If you are on a business event show that to your followers. Let them know what exciting things you are learning and how you going to implement it in your business.
To gain more visibility make sure you use the Hashtag sticker. This feature is great for more exposure especially if you want to improve your brand awareness in a certain area. Let’s say you have a local business (store, coffee shop etc.) then not only use the city (e.g Los Angeles, Boston) but also the exact area you are in (Santa Monica, downtown Boston).
Did you know you can hide your sticker? Maybe your strategy is to gain lots of local awareness for your business but you don’t want the hashtag to be seen in the story? Simply click on it and it will become see-through then make it smaller with your fingers until you can’t see it anymore.
Extra Tip: Make sure you actually go to the hashtag and connect with other people who used that hashtag. Why? They might check out your account or even come to your shop. The more you interact with them, the bigger the chance that you can create a connection with them. The reason why they used that hashtag was that they are also in that area – perfect for your business.
I use this sticker the same way I use the hashtag sticker for a location. Then you tap into the location and do the interaction the same way you did with the hashtag sticker.
Here is where you can turn followers into customers. Create story highlights to showcase your products or services.
You can talk about your services to the camera OR if you are not comfortable with that simply use a story template in Canva and write down highlights of your services in a creative way.
If you have a special collection (e.g summer edition) you can also feature that in your stories.
Last but not least: showcase any blog posts you might have! If you don’t have the swipe up feature just use a tool like link.tree to have more than just one link in your bio.
Use apps for more creative stories
Apps like hype type help you to animate your stories and my favorite App to create an outstanding story is pic collage. I use it to create polls or to show several pictures at once (e.g new products) with a cute background.
